The United Nations
Fern was asked by the United Nations, if she would consult on an unusual branding and positioning project. The United Nations was trying to rebrand and revitalize an entire country – the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Over the course of several months, Fern addressed:
- The issue of lack of significant tourism for this landlocked country with few natural tourist offerings
- The economic inequities resulting from high-quality leatherwork and other goods being produced there, but then shipped to countries such as Italy for the final stitches (so the words “Made in Italy” could be legally used)
- The difficulty in even trying to raise the visibility of a country whose name was just too cumbersome to comfortably pronounce
Amongst her other suggestions, Fern’s idea – to change the name of the country – was eventually able to be implemented in 2018, when the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia officially became North Macedonia.
